Marathon Training

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 11:56 PM
I wrote in a previous post about deciding between training for a half or a full after my 5K on December 5th. For a couple of reasons, I've decided that IF I am healthy (I've had some knee pain the last week but it's getting better quickly) at the time that the official week one of training starts (Jan. 11), I will train for the full. (Actually, the marathon is the Cleveland Marathon and the date to sign up for only $65 is Jan. 8, so I might decide 3 days early.) I'm going to base build between Dec. 5 and Jan. 11.

More details and a question about extending the taper a week )

TIA for your advice/sharing similar experiences!

artificial sweetener equivalents.

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 8:51 PM
I've been making my iced tea with Sweet'N Low for years and have been wanting to cut this out for some time now. We finally finished up the last of the packets in the house and today I made the first pitcher with turbinado sugar. The Sweet'N Low website states that 1/4 cup of sugar is equal to six packets of S'NL. I use 5 packets to a pitcher, so I figured 1/4 cup should be plenty. No way. It tastes virtually unsweetened. I had to add at least another cup to the pitcher for there to be any taste difference, and as any good Southerner knows, now it's not sweet tea since the sweetener was added after the brewing process, it's just tea with sugar. And most of it just settled undissolved at the bottom of the pitcher anyway. Can anybody give me some advice, tell me what I did wrong? I'm new to turbinado so perhaps it's just not sweet enough for me? (Incidentally, I found that evaporated cane juice in bulk is much cheaper, I'm planning to buy some tomorrow.)

Tasting blood

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 8:35 PM
After a couple of weeks of NOTHING, I laced the shoes back up and went for an easy 2 mile jog and noticed around half of the way I started tasting blood. I noticed it, realized that was strange and just kept on going, came back, took a shower, and I feel fine, if a little weirded out.

I didn't bite my lip and I don't have any cold sores.

Thoughts?

Edit: Per g0omba's comment it was 40 degrees F when I was out.

With that mini ear-to-head ratio AND yawing action, this pup might start a cute vortex in the time/space continuum we’d be unable to close.

Stupidity on "Ellen"

  • Nov. 13th, 2009 at 3:44 PM

As seen on Ellen:

Ellen: H-2-O is better known as what?

Contestant: Blackjack? 21?

Fortnately, the game is called "Know Or Go," and if you get the question wrong, you "go" when Ellen presses a button and you drop through a trap door. This contestant was the first to get a question wrong, so she was completely shocked when Ellen did just that. Don't you wish you could do that in real life? :D

(Alas, Ellen didn't catch herself earlier when she asked, "What state is New Orleans in?" and the same contestant answered, "New Orleans?" She let it slide and just moved on to the next question.)

leather vs vegetarian shoes

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 4:50 PM
so this may be a bit too exact of a question, but i have to ask..

deciding solely on the global mess made, which do you think is more environmentally friendly:
a pair of leather shoes or an exact replica with vegetarian leather?

the way i see it, the leather would be more environmentally friendly simply because whether or not i choose to, there are going to be people eating cows & waste not want not.. but if i were to choose vegetarian leather, we're going to have to create that from new raw materials..

what do you think? anyone know how to make rope sandals?
Danvers High School says students can’t say ‘meep’

A quote from the article in the Boston Herald:
The Salem News reported Principal Thomas Murray banned the word after school officials got wind of a student plan brewing on Facebook to stage a major disruption on school grounds using the “meep.”

Southern Comfort [Atlanta Pics]

  • Nov. 14th, 2009 at 11:00 PM
We have come to the very last stop on our Cake Wrecks "World" Tour, dear Wreckies. Now I know, I know; you're going to miss seeing your fellow Wrecktators' Wreckplicas, and the wreckalicious Wrecks our local Wreckerators prepared in each city, but what can I say? (Something starting with "wreck," perhaps?)

Well, without further ado, here are the treats the folks in Atlanta got to partake of earlier this week:

This gravity-defying bit of prettiness was provided by Lisa of Feast Catering. Lisa actually first contacted me waaay back before the first half of the tour, begging us to come to Atlanta so she could provide the cake. How's that for dedication?

In fact, Lisa made TWO cakes. The pretty one, and the...well, let's call it the "fun" one:

[snicker] Isn't it fabulous? The mixing bowl was a strawberry cake so delicious that even I couldn't snag a piece (but I got to hear about it from everyone who did). Heh.

This one was appropriately Wrecked. ;) I especially love the little piping bag.

Our standing-room-only crowd of Wrecktators:

By the way, I don't think I've mentioned this before, but you guys should know that we broke signing-attendance records left and right on this tour. And for those stores that had seen larger events, the employees almost always assured us they'd never hosted one that was this much fun. You guys made that happen, so thank you!

Ok, back to the photos. Here are our three Wreckplica contest "winners":

From the left, that's Amanda, Daniel, and "girl who has to e-mail me her name because I can't read it on the plate." (I'm guessing her parents were hippies.)

Here's a close-up of their entries:

The crowd agreed that Daniels' Coiled Crap Hound was the way to "go."

The Sandra Lee Kwanzaa cake was entered literally as we were about to announce our top 3, which is my excuse for not having a better photo of it. ;)

And a few more favorites:

As usual, you can see the rest of the fabulous entries in the CW Facebook album here.

And that's it for the tour wrap-up entries! Stay tuned for tomorrow's Sweets edition, where you'll see more gorgeous creations from our participating bakers. Thanks again, everyone!
